“The six nuclear reactors in Ukraine may be targeted by terrorists in order to provoke the interest of the international community”, said Professor Dr. Theodore Liolios (Director of the Hellenic Arms Control CenterEKEO) speaking to Greek journalists today. According to EKEO, nuclear waste which is stored close to the reactors might also be used in dirty bombs, (RDD) i.e. Radiological Dispersion Device, contaminating large areas of Ukraine. According to the international news, there are no police on the streets of Ukraine right now so the autorhities, whoever prevails, must work quickly to bring Ukraine’s security forces back to work, because the nation’s vital infrastructure such as its nuclear power plants, is unguarded. Moreover, according to Reuters, Ukraine’s parliament itself called for international monitors to help protect its nuclear power plants on Sunday as tension mounted with Russia. Hryhoriy Nemyria, a member of parliament, said the assembly appealed to the signatories of a 1994 nuclear treaty that guaranteed Ukraine’s safety — including the United States, the United Kingdom and Russia.
The ultra-right “Svoboda” (Liberty) party has remained unconvinced, with one of its representatives in the Ukrainian parliament warning that if Russia doesn’t tread carefully it will be dealing with a nuclear power.
“We’ll regain our status as a nuclear power and that’ll change the conversation. Ukraine has all the technological means needed to create a nuclear arsenal – which would take us about three to six months,” Svoboda party MP Mikhail Golovko said.
The rhetoric, which contradicts the international nuclear non-proliferation treaty Ukraine signed in 1994, is not new for the Svoboda party, one of the driving forces behind the Maidan uprising. Its leader, Oleg Tyagnibok, already promised that the country would go nuclear while he was running for the presidency in 2009.
According to the Director of EKEO, “it is very alarming to hear that politicians who aspire to govern Ukraine would make such irresponsible threats. The international community should take seriously into account the prospect of having to deal with nuclear proliferators in what remains of Ukraine in their hands”
