One Syrian refugee tells his story of getting to Europe. In 2012, almost 8,000 Syrians arrived in Greece through Turkey, according to Ioanna Kotsioni, a Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) migration expert. “First of all, in the very very beginning, people are happy that they have safely reached Europe. They also expect that in Greece, and in Europe in general, they will be received with dignity, that they will receive some basic services, some support, that they will be recognized as refugees. And then they very quickly get disillusioned.”
EKEO believes that there may be a lot of illegal migrants from Syria who are smuggled into Greece through Turkey on the pretext of the ongoing civil war in Syria. The Hellenic Security Advisors warn the Greek State Authorities that there is a possibility that Syrian illegal migrants may smuggle light weapons into Greece, which are in abundance these days in Syria. Another crucial factor is that these illegal migrants may carry infectious diseases which will take a heavy toll on the already overburdened health care system of Greece.
