It dates back to ancient Thrace and the version shown on the video is the war dance of the Christian Greeks inhabitants of Pontos located in Asia Minor (Turkey). This is a traditional war dance (performed in the video by cadets of the Hellenic Army Academy). This war dance here commemorates the Greek genocide also known as the Pontian genocide, which was the systematic killing of the Greek population of the Ottoman Empire during World War I and its aftermath (1914–1923).
